The Echaldaz Bird Taxidermy Collection - Details:

This collection of fine bird taxidermy was formed by Lt. Col. C.T. Echalaz, who published a 330 page catalogue in 1907, which occasionally turns up in the antiquarian book market. He donated the collection to the people of Liverpool, and it remained on public exhibition for decades.

However, it suffered from war damage and vandalism and is now in store.

This book provides some of the background to the collection and its founder, and also a full-colour record of what the various cases looked like. These were mostly created by Hine of Southport and Bisshopp of Oban, with some particularly fine examples by Charles Thorpe of Croydon. The cases are illustrated, with notes on their present condition and the circumstances in which Echalaz collected many of the birds. The book also highlights some of the ethical and practical dilemmas faced by institutions who received such gifts in a different age and now find themselves in a very different social and economic climate.

The book is: A5 size, hard cover, bound in cloth, with 76 pages. There are 98 images in colour, plus 23 halftones reproduced from the original handbook, often showing how some of the cases have been skilfully remodelled in the past.
